Water Music on the Beach will begin at 6018 North Kenmore within the Living Architecture exhibition, a site of immigration. At 12:30PM Balas and Wax lead us in a procession and discussion about the materiality of migration, a force which drove people from their homes in the process of creating Lake Shore Drive in the Edgewater neighborhood. From Ardmore Avenue, SPQ will lead us to Lane Beach at Thorndale Avenue and Sheridan Road for an afternoon of sound performances with Simon Anderson, Katinka Kleijn with Jasmine Mendoza, Norman Long with Gwyneth Anderson and Sara Zalek, Steve Marquette with Aurora Nealand, James Singleton, and Paul Thibodeaux, AJ McClenon, and Carlos Salazar Lermont. This year’s Water Music is a collaborative project with Roman Susan Art Foundation.

This summer, four Summer Youth Employees from different parts of Chicago will:

- LEARN WOODWORKING

- LEARN VIDEO: FILMING AND EDITING

Project mission:

4 teenagers are trained by 2 master carpenters to learn woodworking, video making and editing. Most importantly, they learn cooperation: to work with each other, mentors, and artists, along with stick-to-itiveness. The program rethinks the potential of immersive body-based education. The high degree of the students' work and their esprit de corps confirms the value of treating education as a dynamic space: emphasizing bodily skills, repetition, and technique and an appreciation of older, often forgotten systems of production and bodily movement. While the woodworking honors craftsmanship, the video production allows for a highly experimental approach. The students film their woodworking process, interviewed the artists they worked with, and compile the footage into videos.

This project is made possible as a part of the Year of Creative Youth organized by Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE).

Now in its 5th year, working with neighbors and friends, we will present One Long Table on the last Sunday of the month in July.

Black Out Dinners is an experiential event, a three-course vegetarian dinner in the dark created by a chef and served by Chicago Lighthouse employees. These dinners continue the 6018North mission of connecting people through intimate, transformative encounters.

A Room Has Its Own Voice captures the sonic frequency or acoustics of a room. Artist Troy Briggs 'tunes' the interior rooms to the same frequency. Without visual cues, A Room Has Its Own Voice asks us to listen to rather than look at the architecture of a room.

Troy Briggs is an interdisciplinary artist. He employs technology and sound and everyday objects to create subtle interventions in public and private space. Often slow and almost always very quiet, he creates works that connect listeners and viewers to sounds and images that speak to the delicacy of human connection though the simplest of means. Briggs has exhibited in Chicago, Portland, Oregon and Berlin. He teaches at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and sculpture, sound and new media at Cathege College.

Make Me a Rainbow

October 1, 2017 – January 2018

Preview: Saturday, September 30 // 6 PM

Make Me a Rainbow is part of the 2017 Terrain Biennale, a multi-site exhibition occurring in outdoor locations worldwide. Outdoors on the roof of 6018North, Chicago artist Joey Asal, using water and perfume, will create an olfactory rainbow that occurs during twilight, the golden hour. The scents in the atomizer mist sprinkler system reflect the diverse backgrounds of the neighborhood residents.

Inside on the top floor of 6018North, Rodrigo Lara Zendejas will create an installation based on “Los Voladores de Papantla,” an ancient Mesoamerican ritual during which participants dance on top of a 98 foot pole. Zendejas’ work will spin, creating a rainbow of colors as a parallel to Asal’s outdoor work.

The exhibition will also include previously installed outdoor projects, including the 6018North planters and roof garden by Sarah Mallin and an alleyway garage mural by Moises Salazar.

Joey Asal is a graduate student of design at the School of the Art institute of Chicago. In addition to a rich portfolio of dynamic large scale site-specific installations, Joey is a trailblazer exploring the sensory experience in all its capacities, most notably as it relates to the sense of smell.

Rodrigo Lara Zendejas was born in Mexico 1981. After he graduated from University, he has been teaching courses and workshops in Mexico and the U.S.A. Rodrigo Lara received his BFA from Universidad de Guanajuato, Mexico, and his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Lara's work has been shown extensively in Mexico, the US, Canada, Europe and China. Currently he lives and works in Chicago, IL.

Sarah Mallin is a chef, gardener, and yogini extraordinaire. As a graduate of Moksha Yoga Center’s first teacher training program in 1989, Sarah incorporates yoga and mindfulness with edible gardening, nutrition, cooking, and healing through her biodynamic business Pyrite Sun. She also teaches classes in home cooking and gardening for the Peterson Garden Project in Chicago.

Moises Salazar is an artist working in painting, drawing, and sculpture, video installation. Currently a student at the Art Institute of Chicago, he aims to present new possibilities for exploited people, undocumented immigrants, and people of color through his work.

Abraham Avnisan, Judd Morrissey, Jennifer Scappettone

September 30, 2017 // 6-9 PM

This collaborative performance and installation by Abraham Avnisan, Judd Morrissey, and Jennifer Scappettone will tap the sprawling veins of urban architecture, mining the material and telecommunications infrastructures within a house, while channeling the histories of its inhabitants and their spectral predecessors. Combining original and archival sources, and employing a custom augmented reality system, the artist's project high resolution Lidar scans of 6018North, to create an immersive yet otherworldly experience of the space.

Abraham Avnisan is an artist, technologist and educator whose work is situated at the intersection of image, text, and code. He holds M.F.A. in Art and Technology Studies from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an M.F.A in Poetry from Brooklyn College. Abraham works as a freelance computer programmer and lecturer at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he teaches courses on mobile app development and immersive virtual environments.

Judd Morrissey is a writer and code artist who creates poetic systems across a range of platforms incorporating electronic writing, internet art, live performance, and augmented reality. He is the creator of digital literary works including The Precession: An 80 Foot Long Internet Art Performance Poem, The Last Performance [dot org], and The Jew's Daughter. He is a recipient of a Creative Capital / Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant, a Fulbright Scholar’s Award in Digital Culture, and a Mellon Foundation Collaborative Fellowship for Arts Practice and Scholarship. Judd is an Assistant Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Art and Technology Studies and Writing.

An artist, translator, and teacher, Jennifer Scappettone was born and raised in New York. The recipient of a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2005, she has lived in Italy, Virginia, Japan, California, and Chicago. Her collections of poetry are the chapbooks Err-Residence (2007), Beauty (Is the New Absurdity) (2007), and Thing Ode / Ode oggettuale (2008), translated into Italian with Marco Giovenale, as well as the book-length From Dame Quickly (2009) and The Republic of Exit 43 (Atelos, 2016). Scappettone teaches at the University of Chicago.

The Chicago Maroon Telephones Lines and Veins Intertwine at "Savageness"

You can’t help but wonder what the dilapidated walls of 6018North manor have seen as you weave through the wine-sipping and cheese-sampling crowd on its steps. Inside, unhinged doors and a wall traversed by a moss-like creature make you even more curious about the history of this manor-turned-contemporary-art-space that has become a performance venue for this year’s Chicago Architecture Biennial.  

Scappettone, Morrissey, and Avnisan took turns articulating a prophecy dooming 6018North’s “image of immobility.” They spoke of the house as a “nexus” at the center of many worlds, with invisible sprawling veins connecting it to electricity generators, stamp mills, and mines. Their performative transmission of data paid tribute to the once-vital telegraph and telephone networks that contractors and miners far from home relied on to tell bureaucratic stories about this very house. 

Just outside the wall was another work hosted by the Biennial: the Chapuisat brothers’ In Wood We Trust, a convoluted wooden structure with entrances on the second floor and through a window on the first floor. Scappettone entered the shadowy shaft while Morrissey took the stairs, leaving a befuddled crowd with a glitchy recording of Bing Crosby’s “Pennies from Heaven.” Half of them followed. For those who remained, live feeds from the different miners’ headsets were projected onto the building’s walls, allowing the audience to simultaneously crawl upwards through a dark labyrinth and stand upright at its summit.

For this year’s Expo Chicago at Navy Pier, we are excited to partner again with 3Arts to present a 3Arts awardee and a 3Arts Projects artist. VIP will be located on the second floor of Expo, take the stairs near Eataly Cafe or the elevator near Northern Trust Anchor Lounge. 

Who needs a microphone? Who needs a stage? Within VIP’s democratic lounge – in the floor above the Fair – the public is invited to create and build platforms together. Aram Han Sifuentes’s Protest Banners Talking Back offers a communal space for people to participate, speak up, and resist. Materials, as well as skills, are shared to create a large communal banner. In this space, voices are supported and everyone is invited to come together in solidarity through making. And making is a form of resistance. Onye Ozuzu’s Project Tool is a dance performance and installation in which a sprung wood dance floor is built. The audience is invited to watch and/or learn the skill of woodworking and reconnect body, task, and tool. What is learned physically, emotionally, and conceptually during the building process, shapes the ongoing performance. In this time of insecurity in the arts, Project Tool and Talking Back offers the opportunity to connect, work with each other, and stand strong in the embodied fact that we can literally build our own platforms.

"In showcasing art that was typically not for sale, the fair achieved an unusual depth and relevance. Here was an art fair like many others, but which had also extended outward from its primary venue to take in digital billboards around Chicago (OVERRIDE: A Billboard Project) and the DuSable Museum (Singing Stones by the Palais de Tokyo), as well as a room upstairs from the fair's main floor (VIP: Very Important Platforms)...these exhibitions and events articulated a range of environmental and sociopolitical concerns.

In a room above the fair's main hall, local arts organizations 3Arts and 6018|North presented VIP: Very Important Platforms, a multipart installation behind a door scattered with golden confetti. Described as a "democratic lounge" and "a communal art-making space in which to come together, speak up, and resist," it echoed the critiques of hypercapitalism in OVERRIDE and Food Chain Project. The entrance of the installation's first space was decked out in confrontational fabric banners by Aram Han Sifuentes, Ishita Dharap, Tabitha Anne Kunkes, and Veronica Casado Hernandez. It also allowed viewers to contribute to the making of two further such works. A second room, featured an performance-installation, described as an invitation to "co-create tools to create a more equitable world," in which dancers constructed a sprung wooden dancefloor."

Water Music on the Beach is a series of live performances that highlights Chicago’s proximity to Lake Michigan. The compositions and scores reflect, react to, or personify the sounds of water. This year we are partnering with Djaspora Productions to present works by Benelux (Helen Gillet, Lia Kohl, Katinka Kleijn) Marie Casimir and Meida McNeal, Move Me Soul, Damon Locks, Brian Sandstrom, and more. Painting  by Moises Salazar.

Benelux is the triple cello threat of Helen Gillet, Lia Kohl and Katinka Kleijn. Formed at the 2017 New Orleans Instigation Festival, they use their shared musical sensitivity and sense of exploration to meet, while at the same time expanding the group’s direction in each of their very unique individual expertise.

Marie Casimir is a Haitian-American writer and performer interested in the straddling of multiple cultures and languages and how they resonate in the body. Her work has appeared at Dance Union, Links Hall and At The Table.

Ben Lamar Gay is a composer who deals with many components of sound through various folk traditions past, present and future.

Damon Locks is a Chicago based visual artist, educator, vocalist/musician, and deejay. He attended The Art Institute in Chicago where he received his BFA in Fine Arts. Recently, he has been lending his artistic and/or teaching talents to organizations such as Prisons and Neighborhood Arts Project, Art Reach, the Center for Urban Pedagogy, and at UIC.

Meida McNeal is Artistic and Managing Director of Honey Pot Performance. Over the past two decades, she has produced numerous creative projects as both a solo artist and with Honey Pot Performance, with works performed in Illinois, Rhode Island, Ohio, California, and Trinidad. HPP's newest project, 'ways of knowing,' explores concepts of mastery, expertise, and value, through reciprocal acts of knowledge exchange. The full work will premiere in Spring 2018. Meida also works with the Chicago Park District as Arts & Culture Manager supporting community arts partnerships, youth arts, cultural stewardship, and civic engagement initiatives across the city's parks and cultural centers. 

Move Me Soul is a youth dance company that fuses technique, performance, positivity and creativity. Teens move beyond their limits on and off stage.

Brian Sandstrom Quartet with Steve Hashimoto, Steve Magnone, and TJ Sandstrom. Brian Sandstrom is an contrabass Jazz musician (as well as playing trumpet, guitar, trombone, and percussion). He has been an active player in the Chicago music scene since the early 1980s.

Moises Salazar is an artist working in painting, drawing, and sculpture, video installation. Currently a student at the Art Institute of Chicago, he aims to present new possibilities for exploited people, undocumented immigrants, and people of color through his work.

Curb Appeal
August 23-March 5, 2016 (+ elements of this project remain on view from the outside)

Curb Appeal is the aesthetic look or visual appeal of a location – lawn, porch, windows, door, roof – from the curb. For the 2015 Terrain Biennale – an exhibition occurring in multiple outdoor locations – Curb Appeal re-envisions the way people use their homes – lawn, porch, windows, door, roof – as potential intersections of community play, food production and artistic creation through artistic transformation.

A Plea for Playgrounds – a 12 foot seesaw requiring cooperation to operate – is the result of a collaboration between artist Jim Duignan, a group of elders, and Jennifer Gray, architectural historian at Columbia University in New York. Additional influences were Jane Addams’s Hull-House and the 1905 manifesto A Plea for Playgrounds, which draws connections between poverty, health, democracy, and access to playgrounds. Working with the elders’ stories of their youth, which often revolved around playgrounds as social centers, Duignan and Gray created A Plea for Playgrounds to galvanize awareness about playgrounds as community spaces. The seesaw and the podium, Public Podium for 6018North, encourage the public to reimagine the physical and social spaces of the public sphere, front lawns and porches as interactive zones.

By overlapping three separate gradients of red, blue and green, Degrees of Lightness reveals grey-scale. Placed in 6018North’s windows, the color changing lighting illuminates and shifts the spectrum of each hue. Luftwerk is Petra Bachmaier and Sean Gallero, who create art installations that merge elements of light with facets of architecture and design.

Moises Salazar has created a mural on 6018North’s two garage doors working with Edgewater neighborhood’s youth. A recent ChiArts high school graduate, Moises is a 6018North Summer Youth Employee and is attending SAIC in the fall.

Sarah Mallin has created an edible garden on the roof of 6018North’s front porch and in its planters. The work is a public demonstration garden as an inspiration to encourage people to grow food wherever they live, even if in unlikely places.

Three architectural students from Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) will transform 6018North’s red carpet on the sidewalk and its front door. Dea Ivanovic, Meriem Sakrouhi and Luis Yanez have created a compelling sequence of spatial thoughts based upon color from the sidewalk to the Joseph Albers inspired door that connects the back door to Moises Salazar’s mural on the garage. 

October 1, 2015- January 3, 2017

Chicago-based Mexican artist Rodrigo Lara Zendejas’s project is based on his grandparents’ small personal chapel in their home in Mexico. This soaring project fits within 6018North’s first floor living room and drawing room, where statues and benches line the space. As a nod to the replacement of personal chapels with personal museums, Chapel is filled with statues of artists and architects, rather than the Catholic saints in the chapel that inspired Lara-Zendejas.

Ohio Street Beach
October 1- March 5, 2016

House is al life-size minimal outline of a typical two-story Midwestern house. Framed with aluminum poles and joints, House project an archetypal image of a house that can be visually and somatically experienced. Dreamlike, the structure is placed half on land (the beach) and half in the lake, to reference Chicago’s real and metaphorical connections to water.  Without roof, walls, or floor,  no barriers keep out the wind, rain, sun, and waves. Blending the inside and outside of architecture, the sparse lines of House define the space as physically and psychologically open, exposing architecture and how we metaphorically view, think, and dream about homes. House is presented in conjunction with the the Chicago Architecture Biennale and Chicago Artists’ Month. It is generously supported by the Chicago Park District.

Sarah FitzSimons combines sculpture, photography and video to create pieces that range from temporary interventions to permanently placed work. Her projects often involve oceans, deserts, rivers, or mountain ranges, and explore collisions of the physical and metaphoric. She has exhibited internationally and in cities across the U.S., including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Long Beach, Atlanta, Burlington, and Cleveland, and has installed numerous pieces outdoors. FitzSimons has been awarded residencies and grants from the MacDowell Colony, Vermont Studio Center, I-Park, and the Ohio Arts Council.

ATOM-R is a provisional collective exploring forensics, anatomy, and 21st century embodiment through performance, language and emerging technologies. Participants include Mark Jeffery (choreography) and Judd Morrissey (technology and dramaturgical systems) merge digital literary practices and performance, both of whom were members of Goat Island performance group. The work is performed by Justin Deschamps and Judd Morrissey. 

Kjell Theory is an in progress Augmented Reality (AR) performanace juxtaposing the historical narrative of gay computing pioneer Alan Turing’s forced chemical castration with algorithmic mutations of Guillaume Apollinaire’s 1917 play, The Tits of Tiresias. In Apollinaire’s text, for which he conied the term surrealism, a woman names Theresa transforms into the blind male prophet Tiresias, and her husband gives birth to 40,049 babies.

This exhibition – throughout 6018North's house – draws from Rem Koolhaas’s Elements of Architecture exhibition for the 2014 Venice Architectural Biennale. The architect presented what he considers the fundamentals of buildings: the floor, wall, ceiling, facade, balcony, corridor, door, toilet, stair, et cetera to analyze the components of architecture. However, he claimed to exclude design and art from the analysis. Red Line Service: Soup for the Mind is an exhibition and programming series inspired by the recent Bryant Settlement Agreement concerning Chicagoans experiencing homelessness. This agreement, in an attempt to restrict the widespread and routine disposal of the people's belongings by city authorities, lists what can and can't be legally possessed by segments of Chicago's homeless population. The exhibition and programming at 6018North encourage viewers to consider what constitutes a home and the possessions within it.

Red Line Service: Soup for the Mind is presented by Red Line Service Collaborative which seeks to reframe art’s possibility as a broad social justice endeavor. As cultural practitioners deeply concerned with the widespread poverty that defines and beleaguers Chicago, Red Line Service presents an ongoing series of social interventions into these issues within the terms of artistic practice. Following upon Eva Meyer-Keller’s Death is Certain performance at Links Hall, the Berlin-based artist joins two Chicago artists in a lecture-performance to discuss each of their process and to present excerpts of previous and upcoming works. Eva Meyer-Keller, whose practice intersects performance and the visual arts, joins Kirsten Leenaars, whose work is a hybrid between performance, social practice, and video, and Jennifer Reeder, a filmmaker and visual artist. Light food and drinks served in this intimate setting. 

BIOS

Eva Meyer-Keller (1972) lives and works in Berlin, Germany. She works at the interface of performance and visual art. She has presented her work in 30 countries on 6 continents in a wide range of contexts and sites. Before studying for four years at the School for New Dance Development (SNDO), Amsterdam she studied Photography and visual art (HdK), Berlin and London (Central St. Martins and Kings College). Eva develops projects alone and in collaboration with other artists. She also lends herself as a devisor/performer to other choreographers and woks as a dramaturgical/mentor. Own work Her artwork is distinctive due to its meticulous attention to detail. Eva often uses everyday objects from her immediate surroundings, things that she finds at home, in the supermarket or in the tool shed. This inevitably lends the work an obsessive, domestic aesthetic Her working method always remains marked by the constructive disregard for maintaining any boundary between the visual and performing arts.

Kirsten Leenaars’ practice is a hybrid of social practice, video and performance based work. In her practice Leenaars engages with specific people and communities. Her work oscillates between fiction and documentation, reinterprets personal stories and reimagines everyday realities through staging, improvisation and play. She examines the very nature of our own constructed realities, the stories we tell our selves and the ones we identify with and explores the way we relate to others. In her work she brings to light a shared humanity, often through humor and play. Recent projects include producing a series of 3 performances Notes on Empty Chairs, about loss, community and empathy for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago; creating the video #thisistomorrow with Washington DC based performers and musicians in response to the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner; producing the science fiction film: The Invasion of the Hairy Blobs, currently edited at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio; and Not In Another Place, But This Place… (Happiness) – a video project exploring notions of happiness, responsibility and policy focusing on the Edgewater community in Chicago. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally, amongst others at: Museo Universitaro del Chopo, Mexico City, DCAC, Washington DC, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Glass Curtain Gallery, Threewalls, Gallery 400, 6018 North, and Elaine L. Jacob Gallery, Detroit, Printed Matter, New York, the Wexner Center, Columbus, and at the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, Rotterdam, Kunst Fabrik, Munchen. Leenaars is an Assistant Professor at the Contemporary Practices department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Jennifer Reeder constructs personal fiction films about relationships, trauma and coping. Her award-winning narratives are innovative and borrow from a range of forms including after school specials, amateur music videos and magical realism. These films have shown consistently around the world, including the Sundance Film Festival, The Berlin Film Festival, The Venice Biennale and The Whitney Biennial. She won a Creative Capital Grant in Moving Image in 2015 and short film funding from the Adrienne Shelly Foundation in 2016.

Poetry, presence, data, drinks, all while breaking bread together. Caroline Bergvall, Judd Morrissey, and Jennifer Scappettone kick off their Gray Center experiment, The Data That We Breathe, which examines the physical and poetic dimensions of breath. Looking at the shared roots of the circulation of breath — through poetic inspiration, bodywork practices, molecular and data structures in the air, the channeling of architecture — the salon invites participants to delve into ideas of interconnection, transformation, and receptivity.

In this in-progress presentation of The Data That We Breathe, in the stripped housing of 6018North, Caroline Bergvall, Judd Morrissey, Jennifer Scappettone, and special guest cris cheek explore copper as a conductor: the material basis of historical and contemporary domestic interiors and telecommunications infrastructure. This is a topsoil performance of mining to be staged in the fall, sounding invisible data and exploitation pathways that connect the continents. Via the shared roots of breath’s circulation—through poetics, bodywork practices, particulate and data structures in the air, the channeling of architecture—the IN>TIME salon invites participants to listen for junctures of interconnection, transformation, and receptivity.

Bios

Caroline Bergvall, writer and artist based in London, works across art forms, media and languages. A strong exponent of writing methods adapted to contemporary audiovisual and multilingual and other contextual concerns. Starting-points and source materials readily emerge from both ancient cultural detail and contemporary cultural artifacts or political events. Projects alternate between textual pieces, audio works, drawings, installations, and live performances, often in collaboration. Most recent output Drift (Nightboat, 2014) awarded a Judith E. Wilson Fellowship in Poetry and Drama, University of Cambridge. The performance version of Drift for live voice, percussion (Ingar Zach) and electronic text (Thomas Köppel) toured the UK in 2014 and was presented at Olavsfestdagene, Norway, July 2015. Other publications: Meddle English (2011) and Fig (2005) as well as a DVD of earlier installations Ghost Pieces (2010). Solo exhibitions: John Hansard Gallery (Southampton 2010), Vita Kuben (Umeå, 2014), Callicoon (NY, 2015). Has presented works at: Tate Modern (London), Khoj Centre (New Delhi), Fondation Vuitton (Paris), Mamco Museum (Geneva), NorrlandsOperan (Umeå, Sweden), Powerplant (Toronto), Samtidsmuseet (Oslo), Fundacio Tapies (Barcelona), MCA Denver a.o. Jennifer Scappettone’s work with languages spans scholarly and creative modes of inquiry. Poetry collections include From Dame Quickly (Litmus, 2009) and Exit 43, an archaeology of Superfund terrain and opera of pop-up pastorals forthcoming from Atelos Press. Her critical study, Killing the Moonlight: Modernism in Venice, received Honorable Mention in the Modernist Studies Association’s annual book prize competition. Locomotrix: Selected Poetry and Prose of Amelia Rosselli, which she translated, won the Academy of American Poets’s Raiziss/De Palchi Prize; she has since founded PennSound Italiana, and is at work on translation of Venezianella the Futurist, by F.T. Marinetti. She has collaborated with musicians, dancers, and designers on site-specific projects, including most recently Marco Ariano, Walter Paradiso, and the Difforme Ensemble (on Exit 43 operettas for video and performance), Kathy Westwater and Seung Jae Lee (on the performance work PARK, with showings at Fresh Kills Landfill, Pratt Institute, New York Live Arts, and elsewhere), composer Paul Rudy and AGENCY architecture (on X Locus, documentary sound collages of the underground for the courtyard and tract of Trajan’s aqueduct at the American Academy in Rome). She is Associate Professor at the University of Chicago.

Judd Morrissey is a writer and code artist who creates poetic systems across a range of platforms incorporating computational text, internet art, live performance, and augmented reality. He is the creator of digital literary works including The Precession: An 80 Foot Long Internet Art Performance Poem (2011), The Last Performance [dot org] (2009), The Jew’s Daughter (Electronic Literature Collection, 2006), and My Name is Captain, Captain (Eastgate Systems, 2002). He is a recipient of acknowledgements including a Creative Capital / Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant and a Fulbright Scholar’s Award in Digital Culture. His projects have been included in a broad range of festivals, conferences and exhibitions with recent venues including Centro de Arte Contemporáneo (Buenos Aires), Zero1 Garage (San Jose), Eyebeam (NYC), Le Cube (Paris), Casa das Caldeiras (Coimbra), Anatomy Theater & Museum (London), Performing House (York), Center of Contemporary Culture Barcelona, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Landmark Kunsthalle (Bergen), House of World Cultures (Berlin), Teatre & TD (Zagreb), and the Chicago Cultural Center. His work has been the subject of numerous critical studies and reviews have appeared in the New York Times, The New Republic, RAINTAXI, and the Iowa Review. Judd is an Assistant Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in Art and Technology Studies and Writing. In 2012, he co-founded the performance and technology collective Anatomical Theatres of Mixed Reality (ATOM-r). The group are in a long-term residency at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Chicago. Their first work, The Operature, premiered in 2014, and they are currently working on new large-scale project, Kjell Theøry, scheduled for completion in 2017. cris cheek is a documentary poet. He worked with the Consortium of London Presses in the mid 1970s to run a thriving free print shop. In 1981 he co-founded a collective resource in the east end of London at Chisenhale Dance Space, working alongside choreographers, musicians and performance artists to make creative collaborations. cris taught Performance Writing at Dartington College of Arts (1995-2002) and has been a professor at Miami University, Ohio since 2005. Most recent publications are the church, the school, the beer (Critical Documents, 2007) and part: short life housing (The Gig, 2009). He currently lives in Northside, Cincinnati.

Me moría is an installation/altar/performance alluding to the Mexican celebration of theDay of the Dead on November 1st. This programming responds to the current installation Chapel by  Chicago-based Mexican artist Rodrigo Lara Zendejas (based on his grandparents’ personal chapel in Mexico). The word Memoria in Spanish which means memory, if separated (me moría), translates to I was dying.

The events of Me moría integrates the Latin American ritual into a contemporary North American context. Re-visiting the signification that the celebration invokes, the artists intend to bring to surface the unspoken fear of death in western-consumption-popular culture, and the relationship between our fragility, memory, dying, remembering and honoring.

In a participatory live performance, the audience is invited to build a collective altar comprising of rituals, performative gestures, photos and offerings in honor to lost ones and in recognition of Death. At the same time Emilio Rojas' mother builds up an altar in her house in Mexico City, in honor of her brother, Alfredo, and a live feed of the transforming altar and performance is simultaneously projected, uniting both rituals and countries. 

Other performances include CV Peterson painting The Perplexity of growth or Stagnation - yellow flowers on the wall within 6018North’s "scene of the crime" room.  Blaire Bogin gives personal astrological readings, Dana Major gives personal crystal meetings, and Marcella Torres creates an altar to honor her Mormon ancestors. Food includes tamales, rice and beans.

During the month of October, Every House Has A Door presents Caesar’s Bridge at Comfort Station in Logan Square. Caesar's Bridge is a performance based on the ideas behind Julius Caesar building a bridge over the Rhineland. The sculptural/architectural installation by Ilie Paun Capriel places the audience below the orator of the performance. Every House Has A Door – Lin Hixson and Matthew Goulish – create performances based on historically or critically neglected subjects, in which the subject(s) remain absent from the works. Distinct modes – recitation, installation, movement, music – invite the viewer to assemble the parts in duration and to rediscover the missing subject within their own space and time.

Pleasure Zone takes you on a journey – through Michal Samama’s and Keijaun Thomas’s body-based performances – to spaces rarely seen in the Theatre de la Ville. Michal Samama, whose performances investigate quotidian movement over time, will lead audiences up to Sarah Bernhardt’s loge to experience Samama’s visceral relationship to the late actress’s original bathtub within the loge. Keijaun Thomas, whose performances question normative movement and behavior, will lead audiences up to artist Lise Haller Baggesen’s glam installation within a former 1970s bar, which celebrates disco as a radical inquiry into the politics of pleasure, ecstasy, and desire. 

Pleasure Zone is divided into two performances. Half of the audience follows one performer, the other half follows the other performer. The audience returns to the original starting point to follow the other performer. 

To honor the upcoming COP21 Paris climate talks at the United Nations, we are serving water with organic herbs - melisse and mint - from Marjetica Potrc's garden La Semeuse at Les Laboratoires d'Aubervilliers.

Chicago-based Mexican artist Rodrigo Lara Zendejas’s project is based on his grandparents’ small personal chapel in their home in Mexico. This portable chapel - also presented at Expo Chicago - fits within 6018North’s first floor living room and drawing room. As a nod to the replacement of personal chapels with personal museums, Chapel is filled with statues of artists and architects, rather than the Catholic saints in the chapel that inspired Lara-Zendejas.

Its Elemental
This exhibition – throughout 6018North's house – draws from Rem Koolhaas’s The Elements of Architecture exhibition for the 2014 Venice Architectural Biennale. The architect presented what he considers the fundamentals of buildings: the floor, wall, ceiling, facade, balcony, corridor, door, toilet, stair, et cetera to analyze the components of architecture. However, he claimed to exclude design and art from the analysis. Framed with aluminum poles and joints, House is an extremely minimal outline of a life-sized two-story house. Connecting Chicago's architecture and Lake Michigan, the house will sit half in the water and half on the land (the beach) of Ohio Street Beach. Blending the inside and outside of architecture, its minimal lines define the space of a house yet it physically and psychologically opens and exposes the architecture and how we metaphorically view, think, and dream about homes.

ATOM-R performs within Sarah FitzSimons’s House which is physically open to the elements, minimally defining its exterior and interior. The performative collective responds to the house by exploring how bodies are simutaneously liberated and contained within space.

Every House Has A Door (Lin Hixson, Director, and Matthew Goulish, Dramaturg) create performances based on historically or critically neglected subjects, in which the subject remains absent from the works. Caesar's Bridge references Julius Caesar's act of building a temporary bridge to cross the Rhine River. The architectural platform/installation designed by Ilie Paun Caprie serves as a unique stage, placing the audience below the orator.

Shotgun
Los Angeles-based architects First Office’s (Andrew Atwood and Anna Neimark) Shotgun is a deceptive space of two connected doors. Mimicking the movement of Expo attendees, the two doors open and close to create four galleries of perpetual motion. Originally designed in 1927 by Marcel Duchamp, First Office has redesigned the structural and ornamental details to fit the standard elements of Shotgun House construction, with the decoration and molding also serving as structural elements. First Office is the recipient of the 2015 Architectural League Prize for Young Architects and Designers.

Chapel and Antechamber
Chapel is based on Chicago-based Mexican artist Rodrigo Lara Zendejas’s grandparents’ small personal chapel in their home in Mexico. Chapels—the earliest spaces of Christian worship—were often just a room within an individual’s home. While personal chapels are now relatively rare, the number and size of private art collections and personal art museums has increased, becoming contemporary temples of secularism.  As a nod to these art temples, Lara Zendejas’s chapel is filled with statues of artists, rather than his grandparents’ statues of saints.  Next to Chapel, Chicago artist Kathleen McCarthy is creating an experience of an antechamber.  In addition, a series of performances will occur in this space:

This sound series, curated by 6018North for the Art Institute’s Jean-Luc Mylayne pavilion, focused on breath to create a sonic landscape that complements Mylayne’s method of photographing birds. The inimitable Claire Chase, flutist from ICE, kicked off the series on Friday, June 26. Performances took places on Friday evenings in the Lurie Garden in Millennium Park throughout the summer.

In 2015, Summer Youth Employees completed the following tasks at 6018North:

- Built two exhibitions for Chicago’s first International Architecture Biennale, Rodrigo Lara Zendejas' Chapel and Bryan Saner's piece for Its Elemental, at 6018North

- Built an architectural project for EXPO Chicago

- Documented, filmed, and posted about their construction process on 6018North’s website and social media    

- Assisted artists Bryan Saner and Rodrigo Lara Zendejas with constructing windows and pedestals within 6018North 

- Learned how to shoot and edit film with artist Zachary Hutchinson

- Documented the process of preparing these exhibitions

- Interviewed and filmed artists Rodrigo Lara Zendejas and Jim Duignan

- Filmed and edited footage of The Air We Breathe sound performances

- Created a video documentary (stop gap film) of the artistic process of creating work for Chicago’s first International Architecture Biennale

As part of Fluxfest 2015, Fluxers from around the globe present an evening of performance, interactive events, mailart making, sound works, and playful mayhem. Fluxus performances blur the boundaries of art and daily experience with actions ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, quiet and contemplative to loud and interactive. Curated by Keith Buchholz and the Worldwide Contemporary Fluxus Community.

A LISTENING PARTY: Psych Records
February 22, 2105 at 6018North
The final event of Fluxfest 2015 is a listening party for Psych Records. Founded in 2011, Psych Records has released a staggering array of vinyl LP’s, audiocasettes, and cd’s documenting both contemporary Fluxus sound work, and previously unpublished works by classic Fluxus artists such as Wolf Vostell and Milan Knizak. Kommisar Hjular & Mama Baer create limited edition releases, often available with one-of-a kind collage or sculptural covers. Many of the LP’s include sound work by artists present.

What is transformation? Is it changing the world or changing how we view the world? This event pairs three unique transformational experiences. Timed during Chicago Artists Month, this event is for artists to nurture themselves, since many of CAM events involve artists giving to others. While artists are often called on to create group or societal transformations, this event offers unique ways of experiencing transformation together.

Gift Circle with Lara Oppenheimer and Maureen Walrath
What is a gift circle? A gift circle is a simple from of gift economy – the original economy, the family economy, the tribal economy — a shared economy. In a gift circle, you ask for what you need and you offer from your abundance. You express a need — every need is acceptable — to the group with no expectation of it being fulfilled. Then the circle goes around again and you offer a gift, something you would like to share with no expectation of it being accepted.  A wide range of things have been shared: a bag of pears, an external hard drive, an Indian dinner delivered to your door, editing skills, conversation in Arabic, French, Italian & Spanish, studio visits, research help (from a librarian), etc., etc. Afterwards, people check in with the folks whose gifts/needs/wishes spoke to them and schedule exchanges. 

Lumetype One on One with Caro D’Offay and Laura Gilmore
What is Lumetype? Lumetype is a process that transforms objects into a light source through phosphorescent paint and photographic paper. Each person is invited to use their hands to illuminate photo-paper, which is then developed using photographic chemicals. Unlike photography, the phosphorescent paint reveals the wave/particle duality of light, scattering and revealing depths. This individual Lumetype of your hand potentially reveals how light works dualistically, but how the world may also be working and revealing itself — both logically and creatively — at this moment in your hand.

Frames and Perception with Alice Berry
Frames and Perceptions is a group engagement in a therapeutic experience. If art is an agreement between an artist and an observer, group therapy is a similar pact between participants to experience together. This shared moment — an hour long client-centered therapeutic session for the group — explores the connections between perception and therapy; and art and experience. Following the Gift Circle, Frames and Perceptions offers a therapeutic space to meditate together upon the issues and concerns that often accompany the acts of giving and receiving.

September 18–21, 2014 at EXPO CHICAGO: The International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art, Navy Pier, Chicago

From the Incas to kings and queens, popes and bishops, celebrities, and hip hop rappers, bling has transfixed our eyes and captured our imagination. Bling Bling examines optical excess, pairing it with protest and glamour, presenting a social experience of luxury. This second floor blinged out space – replete with a faded Louis Vuitton garden, a disco pumping protest songs, a series of performances including a portrait dress-up studio, and a group exhibition – offers an experiential, social, and sensorial experience that highlights art’s connection to bling, spectacle, and democratic self-expression.

Artists include: Steve Atkins, Lise Haller Baggessen, Christine Harrison Frei, Beth Kamhi, Jason Pallas, Christopher Saclolo, and Sadie Woods. Performances by Murat Adash, Nelly Agassi, Alice Berry, Kendall Delashment, Christine Harrison Frei, and others.

City Alive With Dreams is a two year long public art project of filling the city with musical interpretations of people’s sleeping dreams.The initial phase of collecting the dreams of one person a week was part of 6018North's Home: Public or Private? exhibition. The second phase transformed the dreams into artwork and poems, which became songs – since music is such a prominent part of Chicago’s heritage – performed throughout the City. If dreams, art, and culture are the soul of a city, this performance in the verdant backyard of 6018North, aims to reawaken your dreams as a source of inspiration for you as well as the City as a whole.

City Alive With Dreams is created by artist Carron Little who is an In The Works Artist in Resident for Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

6018North presents five artists’ new installations and performances that involve the audience in the works’ creation and/or reception. The artists offer an intimate exchange and dissemination of ideas about the possibilities of risk in public encounters and social engagement. The various forms of risk taking not only stimulate ideas about physical and psychological risk but question how empathetic encounters in art and social practice can effect social and artistic change.

Encounters include various types of risk taking (those taken previously, in the moment, and those that involve the artist and/or the audience):

Kirsten Leenaars’ screening of her film NOT IN ANOTHER PLACE, BUT THIS PLACE… (HAPPINESS), 2013 is accompanied by a live performance by Leroy Bach, Dan Bitney, and Matthew Lux. The work was originally created in Edgewater as part of 6018North’s Happiness Project, where Leenaars asked 46 Edgewater residents what would make a more perfect society. These answers informed the film and many of the interviewees are the actors.

Murat Adash’s Body Building, 2013 is a durational work for multiple performers who observe the audience while the audience observes the performers.

Sanaz Sohrabi in As if they fall, 2013 performs under heavy stones suspended from 6018North’s walls. The audience is invited to move through the performance.

Alyssa Moxley’s Same Side of the Street, 2013 is a camera obscura installation that projects the images and sounds of people outside the front entrance of 6018North onto speakers made of translucent paper.

Michal Samama‘s Move Like A Body, 2013 is performed for two hours within a locker, which functions as a frame for her body. Moving throughout the evening within an institutional locker, while breathing through a whistle, her vulnerable body mediates between the dynamics of body, voice, power, and vulnerability.

Peter Ferry, Staying the Course, (ongoing) Each note in David Macbride’s score represents an American solider killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Joshua Kent’s The flowers in the field are free, 2013 is a subtle performance installation that is revealed at the end of the evening when the artist discusses the divisions between life and art, poverty and surplus, and invisibility and aesthetics.

Risky Encounters is created in collaboration with Columbia College’s RISK: Empathy, Art, and Social Practice exhibition, Feb. 10-April 26, at Columbia College Glass Curtain Gallery, curated by Amy Mooney and Neysa Page-Lieberman, with The Hyde Park Art Center, 6018North, and Rebuild Foundation. RISK: Empathy, Art, and Social Practice considers the interdependent role of empathy and risk in socially engaged art as practiced by Chicago contemporary artists. The exhibition focuses on artists who work in a public arena to foster connections between individuals and to activate communities. The work is divergent in medium, content and scope, but shares an interest in initiating and negotiating relationships through personal interaction. Working with cultural partners and sites across the city, RISK highlights some of the most exciting projects emerging in this field and explores artists’ motivations and viewers’ expectations of social art practice.

Arranged as a play to take place in three installments over the course of three days, The People in Dining Room 5 Wish to Have Your Attention presents time-based works relating to difference, health, and family within a dramatic structure. Escape Group is Anthony Romero and Jillian Soto.

Yesterday’s Paper is a pop-up papermaking station where you can try your hand at pulling a simple sheet of handmade paper - all made from the collected conference waste.
Yesterday’s Paper is a “Make and Take”:
- You donate paper waste from the CAA conference.
- Using an electric blender, we turn this trash in to pulp for paper making.
- You help aid the pulp-making process by shredding your trash into small postage stamp sized squares. 
- Sheets dry over night at Columbia College’s Center for Book and Paper and return, serving as take-away material.
- You are invited to either “Take or Make”: Take a piece of this paper or mark-make on one of these papers (drawing, writing, etcetera) and leave it behind for the next person.
Conference attendees involved with the table become part of a workflow that results in community-created paper artworks. Yesterday’s Paper is a way to generate conversation about hand papermaking, sustainability, waste, and the community engaged art form known as social practice. Yesterday’s Paper is in conjunction with Columbia College’s exhibition Social Paper: Hand Papermaking in the Context of Socially Engaged Art.

Housed within a former bank, this multi-media art exhibition. emphasizes diverse and holistic interpretations of the American Dream. Created for EdgeUP – a Chicago Artists’ Month festival of Edgewater and Uptown – the exhibition celebrates these neighborhoods as successful examples of the melting pot. The works reflect the neighborhoods’ unique diversity and emphasize utopian ideas of community. While some works point out problems, other works highlight the people maintaining America – its ideals, land, gardens, and public spaces – as well as the artists and groups who holistically and dynamically build community through art.

FLATS Studio space is generously donated by Cedar Street Co. This exhibition was highlighted by Time Out: 5 Art Shows to See.

Artist David Rueter’s customized, interactive blinking LED lights with microcontrollers and radio units broadcast a radio signal creating a kind of blinking, synchronized mass when gathered together, like certain species of fireflies.

Combining two operas at the same time, this performance, organized by musician Julia Miller, creates unexpected, improvisational moments within order.

Dave Ford’s interactive sonic sculpture encourages kids and adults to build rhythmic sounds through swinging. 

One Long Scarf

Knit and crochet in the parks to create a 2 mile scarf connecting Edgewater to Uptown. At the end of October, the scarves are distributed to social agencies in the EdgeUp area.

For HOME, four artists have designed individual rooms to create an “artists’ home” – a kitchen, living room, bedroom, and studio – within EXPO. John Preus and Dilettante Studio’s kitchen, built from reclaimed cabinetry hosts performances, workshops, and talks curated by Laura Shaeffer from SHOP with John Marciniak. Sabina Ott’s chill-out living room offers EXPO attendees a captivating space to relax, while Jane Jerardi’s performative bedroom presents a dreamy moment of longing. Lise Haller Baggesen has recreated her artists’ studio – replete with disco balls, glitter, and glam – for you to sit in and contemplate life as an artist.

This site-specific work "reinstalls" the many doors of 6018North to create a physical questioning of borders and their ability to organize space, ideas, and people. The door is a powerful part of theatre of regulating access – a servant to solitude and privacy, an invitation, chance or permission for entrance, a barrier to strangers or intruders. On the other hand, a door that’s been unhinged from its frame enacts a certain abandon of the normative space and normative behavior in such a space. In the process of pushing a dilapidated mansion to be even more physically dysfunctional and yet more open, Vlatka Horvat creates a metaphor for the possibilities and/or limits of artists' intentions to affect the social relations of those who participate within public and private space. Door to Door continues the artistic interventions created for 6018North’s Home:Public or Private? exhibition to question how to make public what is often considered private.

Vlatka Horvat (born in Čakovec, Croatia) makes works in sculpture, installation, drawing, performance, and photography. Her projects often focus on re-arranging or reconfiguring objects, built space, and social relations at play in it. She lives and works in London, and was recently  an Open Studio resident at the Hyde Park Art Center.

Twenty artists’ works each from the Midwest cities of Chicago and Detroit were brought together via suitcases to meet with the work of two Hamburg artists. Featuring painting, drawing, collage, video, artists' books, photography, and sculpture, the exhibition highlights these distinct urban areas as manifested through art. The individual artworks invited both parallel and contradictory readings in the encounters that happen between the works and the cities in which they are produced. Presented at Kunsthaus Speckstrasse – Hamburg’s famous artists’ community space – the exhibition was co-curated by Tricia Van Eck, from Chicago’s 6018NORTH and Kerstin Niemann from FILTER, Detroit.

What does it mean for an artist to make art for the public, in public? What is "in public" and who is a "public"? Judith Butler recently questioned Hannah Arendt's "the space of public appearance" stating that we need to ask the purpose of public space, how a public forms, who appears where and when, doing what, and what are the conditions that supports this appearance?  This discussion asks what is "the space of public appearance" for an artist and is there a distinction between work made for "the space of public appearance vs. work that is made for the studio and gallery? Who is the public (or plurality) that work is being made for, and how is this public (or plurality) meant to respond?

Using the exhibition Re: Chicago as a starting point  Jeff Heubner, Amy Mooney, and Tricia Van Eck, discuss how Chicago defines itself in relation to other artistic centers, such as Paris, New York or Los Angeles. The discussion connects Chicago's history of community art to present day art practices and events. Rather than submit to the label of “second” city, it presents Chicago as a center in its own right with an artistic perspective and community as distinctive as its geography, economy and politics.

Re: Chicago highlights work by 40 artists, each chosen by a member of the Chicago art world, and invites viewers to join in a conversation about who’s famous, who used to be, and who ought to be.

This creative kick-off at 6018NORTH presents a shortened version of Cage's rarely performed Variations #5 and 59 1/2, a piece for cello.  The event allows press to meet the artists and composers bringing Cage's works to the city to celebrate the work of this influential composer, musician, and artist. John Cage, a co-founder of Fluxus, was born in 1912 and this celebration of his music - including early and later and featuring some rarely performed works  - will be presented in various venues throughout the city during the weekend of April 13-15.

"The Jettisoned" -  Yoni Goldstein's and Meredith Zeilke's sweeping tableaux vivant,  shot in Chicago, Mexico City, and Poland - was 6018North's first installation. 

6018North hosted a dinner to celebrate this important three-channel work and to honor and celebrate the individuals who comprise a community of artists central to “The Jettisoned”.  Individuals were invited to share text relevant to the theme of the collective and conditional body.

Derived from the Latin word for “flowing,” Fluxus suggests a playful fluidity between art and life, with a particular emphasis on printed material and performance. The films presented, including a new film by Jonas Mekas as an homage to George Maciunas, explore this fluidity. Roughly 50 years ago Maciunas brought together a wide variety of artists who were expanding the boundaries of what was considered art. This expansion continues in these films.

What does happiness look like for you, others, and the city?

The Happiness Project is a re-imagining of how individuals might best live and work together in urban space through engaging in unexpected and transcendent activities. Presented within empty storefronts in various parts of the city in November,  the exhibition fosters connections between "the city that works" and "the city of neighborhoods," as well as ideas of work and play. After 22 years of the longest serving mayor in Chicago's history, Chicago’s new leader, Rahm Emanuel, is creating a new cultural policy plan. While artists often greet new politicians with a screed of demands, The Happiness Project aims to articulate the potential of how the right to pursue happiness, if applied to work, life, and governmental policy decisions, could transform the city and the well being of its inhabitants.

Because of The Happiness Project, artists were included in the planning process of envisioning the cultural future of Chicago. From Feb. 29 to April 4, 2012 community meetings happened across the city to discuss Chicago's Cultural Plan. For a great account of the previous meetings, see below +

This precursor to the official November opening of The Happiness Project, set the stage for discussing the effort involved in happiness - personal and communal - since Wheat's neon sign spells out the illusion of handouts.

Gwyneth Anderson's Laughing Video
Laughing Video is a study of the suppression and expression of  happiness, as carried out with a group of individuals. One person was asked to maintain a serious expression, while the rest of the group stood behind the camera and attempted to make the subject smile. The result is a series of faces struggling to stifle emotion, each eventually succumbing to laughter. The original work as carried out at Harold Arts in Ohio is presented in the storefront window, while filming with the public occurs on the sidewalk at 27 W. Randolph at the following times:

Kirsten Leenaars's Under Construction

In humorous and performative ways, Leenaars’s Under Construction asks “what is happiness” and “what is a perfect society” by including the people of the 48th Ward to discuss their role in participatory democracy. Walk in, watch the making of and development of the project, and participate during the filming. Through the extensive interviewing process, the project has grown to include an artist-in residency program at Senn H.S. (see image below) developed by the Leenaars to teach Edgewater students multi-media arts. Leenaars expanded the residency program to include the artists Industry of the Ordinary (Adam Brooks lives in Edgewater) and Juan Angel Chavez.

Cosmic Workshop is a collaboration using indigenous symbols of the Americas. Centered around harmony, cycles of change and transference of energy, the artists aim to explore happiness through multiple modes of communication – visual art, music, conversations, and interaction. Finding a balance between work and play, the space is meant to be a public zone for exploring ideas, sounds and words that encourage open–ended explorations of how to transform reality through happiness. The space became a clubhouse and workshop for the people in the community who most needed a space for creativity - kids.

Experimental Sound Studio presents Laughter and Tears, a surround-sound installation using the state of the art accoustics of the Pritzker Pavilion. Starting with recordings of laughter from a variety of sources, including improvising vocalists, anonymous audiences, and ordinary citizens, Chicago composers Olivia Block and Joseph Mills employ numerous electronic and acoustic techniques to transform and structure these sounds into a coherent musical form that explores laughter in all its range and nuance, from the comic to the devious. Lou Mallozzi shapes the composition into a surround-sound format creating an immersive installation environment.

Jennifer Mills, Dealing With New Demands (group exhibition)

Dealing With New Demands offers multiple artists’ perspectives on the questions of happiness and quality of life proposed by “The Happiness Project.” The exhibition is organized as an art gallery and sales event, with each original and affordable work ($10-20) on view only until it is purchased, after which it is immediately deinstalled and taken home. The artwork is intended to be a catalyst for continued conversation in people’s homes. The sold artwork becomes a catalyst for continued conversation in people’s homes and the red “sold” dots document the exchanges as well as suggest a booming art economy created by artistssuggest a booming art economy created by artists. The proceeds of the sales are split between the artists, curator, and “Street-Level Youth Media,” a local organization that offers free after-school media arts workshops to neighborhood youth.

The Listening Room after-school program

The Listening Room is a after-school workshop with ICE musicians and 5th grade classes, who learn to create a vocabulary of sounds that are translated into symbols, and the symbols are translated into a score, which is rehearsed by the musicians. After listening to the performance the students modify the score. The musicians then perform the final score for the public in the Swift Elementary school auditorium. The community reception is provided by 48th ward Alderman Harry Osterman.  The Listening Room is courtesy of ICE musicians, Peter Margasak, Swift Elementary School, and 48th Ward Alderman Harry Osterman

IX. Window (27 W. Randolph St.)

Meg Duguid's and Nick Black's Human-powered bicycle analog animation machine

Using vaudevillian hand-made sets and props, this window display humorously emphasizes the power of individual creativity and energy. By depicting a city run by bicycle power, the artists suggest that Chicago could increase quality of life through harnessing existing energy sources. As a result the city and its buildings could save energy, elevate physical well-being, decrease pollution, and create a sense of interconnection among its citizens. The window display prompts citizens to envision other problems being solved with simple solutions.

The Happiness Project continued with 2 works:
March 11-12, 2012 Kirsten Leenaars filmed Under Construction with 48th Ward citizens as the actors at Senn High School (5900 N. Glenwood). *  ** 

1. Leenaars’ Under Construction asks “what is happiness” and “what is a perfect society” by including the people of the 48th Ward to discuss their ideas about happiness and participatory democracy. Kirsten Leenaars interviewed 46 people from the community and the above image shows the  connections her interviewees drew between happiness, politics, democracy, and freedom. The right side represents community, the left individuality. Yellow connotes problems. She has now finished interviewing 48th Ward Chicagoans. The final film shooting will occur March 10-11 at Senn H.S. (5900 N. Glenwood) where the interviewees come together to play themselves as citizens of an imaginary community 'Everywhen'. This community performative event connects neighbors through participation. By embodying themselves in this imaginary community, they echo the collaborative nature of the project and the idea that happiness is a communal pursuit. Come and watch the humorous performances of a group of people building a road map toward a better communal future.  

2. Julie Walsh's Smiley, 2011
Smiley, 2011 is an exploration of the egalitarian nature of happiness as exemplified by children marking thier happiness through location. Students at Baker Demonstration school received smiley face stickers and chalk and were asked to use the chalk to draw smiley faces where they were happy and take a photograph. The photographs are presented at the school in January.

++THE MAGIC OF PEOPLE, PLACES, PURPOSES++

1. Chicago, with its cheap rents, wealth of cultural offerings, and extensive alternative spaces, is a hospitable place for cultural experimentation.

2. Chicago has numerous communal organizations and some of the keys to their success are:

        a.  A clear vision (usually a visionary leader advances this vision)

        b.  Participants feel that their engagement is a win-win situation (all benefit by being involved in the organization)

        c.  Strong lines of communication exist among multiple coalitions (both inside and outside the organization)

        d. The magical meeting of needs and wants happens through communication and partnerships (the "garbage can theory").

        e. Transparency helps - people are less afraid of what they can see and what they know, such as community gardens and libraries.

        f.  Democratic voice is key - people want to have a say in what effects them.

        g. Synergies are efficient and contribute to innovation and the clustering effect of arts and culture.

3. Artists can benefit from looking at how musicians organize and work together.

4. We all need to communicate, cooperate, and coordinate to create more amazing opportunities.

5. To be addressed in future dinners:

        a. Architects have more job opportunities in Chicago than artists do. Why don't artists? How can this change?

        b. Global firms based in Chicago should be encouraged to be locally engaged and buy local artwork for their offices.

        c. Chicago's lack of a creative, globally branded image is a problem.  (World Business Chicago's branding for Chicago does not   address the innovation and creativity of workers as if Chicago is a factory town) 

        d.  Chicago has a wealth of spaces with cheap rent (more than Berlin). How does this information get disseminated nationally and internationally?

           e.  Chicago has minimal media outlets. What are best practices for transmitting information so that "if we build it, people will come"?

           f.   What are the best incubation practices for building communal clusters of pollination between art, culture, business, and community?

           g.  How can public policy and private businesses best facilitate and encourage art and culture clusters?

Kim Shoenstadt is a Los Angeles-based artist whose expansive wall drawings reference elements of architecture and landscape as if clashing together. Painted and drawn directly on two contiguous walls and floors, this work conflates and weaves images and vistas of Richard Neutra's architecture in LA, buildings in Salt Lake City, and abandoned 5-star hotels in the Sinai Peninsula. 

Sara Schnadt's Universe
June 18 - July 18, 2011
For this installation, Schnadt scattered thousands of tiny metal nuts to create a field of "stars" that approximate the experience of looking at the night sky and our attempts to locate ourselves within the universe.

By selling small works of art at low prices, Mills aims to disseminate art throughout the city, presenting an accessible version of the often rarified art market. Intentionally devaluing her labor and the art object, her work focuses on interactions with the viewer and the resulting performative transactions that occur.  

George Maciunas & Beyond: Fluxus Never Stops
July 23 - August 28, 2011
When Fluxus originated roughly 50 years ago, George Maciunas brought together a wide variety of artists working outside the boundaries of what was considered art at the time. From found objects to postcards, film, publications, and performance scores,  this show of work was organized by Keith Buchholz and created by "The Eternal Network" of artists, poets, and friends who have interpreted the idea of Fluxus aims to honor the legacy of George Maciunas.
